Exercising During Pregnancy

In the past, pregnant women were often discouraged from exercising regularly, but more and more doctors nowadays are approving and even recommending fitness programs for future moms. Exercising can help you feel and remain healthy. Regular exercise also relieve stress, build stamina which can be important for when you go into labor, and give you more energy.

If you exercised regularly prior to your pregnancy or even if you have never participated in a fitness program, you should be able to workout periodically as long as your doctor approves. Make sure you consult with your health care provider prior to starting any exercise regimen. Your doctor should be able to provide you with guidelines to follow based on your current health and medical history.

There are many good ways to get some exercise during your pregnancy and some to avoid as well. Your doctor can you give you specific advice regarding any fitness program that interests you, but if you are careful not to overdo it and use caution, most forms of exercise can be considered safe for pregnant women. Walking and swimming are two low impact, total body exercises that many pregnant women can enjoy. Elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, stair climbers and cycling are good choices as well. Anything requiring balance and coordination can be somewhat challenging and perhaps frustrating, but safe. Examples of activities that your doctor will almost certainly deem off limits would be contact sports, activities like ice skating where a serious fall is a possibility, or sports like basketball or volleyball where a lot of running and jumping is involved. Again, talk to your doctor and do not try to do too much.

There are other things to consider when starting an exercise program during your pregnancy. For example, you are going to need to stay comfortable. A good sports bra is a must as are loose, comfortable maternity exercise clothes. Make sure you wear shoes that provide support and cushioning. Avoiding physical activity on extremely hot and humid days and dressing appropriately for the temperature are important as well. Clothes that can be layered like tees and sweatshirts are good to have. Focus on practical workout clothing rather than stylish maternity clothes for the gym. If you are going to be swimming, maternity swimsuits and tankinis are available that can accommodate your changing figure.

Being pregnant is no reason to shy away from exercising. Talk to your health care provider about fitness regimens that are appropriate for you. As long as you have approval from your doctor and do not overexert yourself, you can enjoy the benefits of exercise during your pregnancy.
